A Transcultural Reading Group on the Chinese Fairy Tale The Black General

The first trancultural reading group on the Chinese fairy tale The Black General, organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Analytical Psychology (HKIAP), has just been completed successfully: five encounters either in person or through a shared web platform and a final group enacting the archetypal characters of the story through the methodology of Personal-Impersonal Deep Writing (PIDW) (M. Tibaldi, Personal-Impersonal Deep Writing (PIDW), The Hong Kong Seminars).

The reading group was aimed at looking at the classical Chinese story The Black General in a transcultural perspecitve, using the Jungian model of the psyche as a common reference to approach and to understand it.
The group highlighted, among others, the dynamics between a negative and a positive male complex, a Chinese cultural issue such as the inferior position of woman and feminine in society, some family's shadow aspects etc. The double Western and Eastern viewpoint brought to a better understanding of what in the story was "cultural" and what "archetypal", differenciating them in a more conscious way.

The methodology of Personal-Impersonal Deep Writing (PIDW) let the participants enact some archetypal characters of the story deeply resonating in them, giving visibility to various core personal issues.

The group noticed also how the so called "Chinese Fairy Tales" are to be considered more properly "Fables", that is stories which purpose is above all educational.
As in the previous workshop Fairy Tales for Life: The Handless Maiden (M. Tibaldi, Fairy Tales for Life: The Handless Maiden, The Hong Kong Seminars), Personal-Impersonal Deep Writing (PIDW) revealed itself as a psychodynamic tool that facilitates the understanding and the confrontation with the Jungian model of the psyche and gives a direct experience of the conscious and unconsious interplay inside themselves.

Reading groups and Personal-Impersonal Deep Writing (PIDW) will be proposed regularly to HKIAP routers and members as a structured part of the Jungian IAAP training in Hong Kong.
